Music Centers

We had talked recently at one of our meetings about music centers. Below is a link to centers that I would like to try this year. I liked them because they're more than just busy work for the students. I like the thought processes involved in these centers. I especially like the Kindergarten grocery center, the graphic notation center, and the Fly Swat center.

Kodaly Song Resource

This little gem of a website allows you to search for songs via any of the following: title, melodic element, tone set, age, origin/continent, rhythmic element, meter, tonal center, range, form, song type, pickup, chord progression, guitar technique, violin, and scale (modes and such).

You do not have to register to use it. Try selecting from one of the drop down boxes, ex "dorian" under "scale" and hit "apply". All of the dorian songs in their song base will pop up. And the best part??? You can click on the song title for the sheet music! Sweet!

Play around with it and try it out!

Online Rhythmic Meter Machine

I had a lot of fun creating various meters with this online tool. Your students may enjoy it as well. This is a nice supplement to a lesson on the difference in meters. I absolutely love Phil Tulga's meter chart where he posted some of his favorite meters!

I would create meters and have the students practice moving around the room to them. Perhaps they could step inside of a hula hoop on beat one only, and walk outside of it for the remaining beats. Or they could find body percussion that would work with that meter. Then have the students create meters by dragging the pickles and cucumbers into the box and have them try to move to it as well.

You will need shockwave to use this.

Welcome!

Welcome to our music page. This site was designed as a resource for the Music teachers of Monongalia County Schools in WV. Here we hope to share resources and tips found online and elsewhere to help enhance our music programs. We will post information related to the new Common Core Music Standards. We will also post important dates for staff development and other relevant material. With this site, we hope to create and develop our connections with our music colleagues as we work together to reinforce and strengthen Monongalia County School's exceptional Music Program.
